We took a little day trip to Sodus Point on the shores of Lake Ontario to see the lake and the town’s old lighthouse.
In the 19th century Sodus Point was an important port on the New York side of Lake Ontario. The Erie Canal changed that, and there was an (last ditch?) attempt to build a canal from Sodus Bay to the Erie Canal that never got going. As a result, Sodus Point became a 19th century resort destination.

Today Sodus Point is a charming little village (900 pop.) that caters to summer visitors. Like Erie, the point of the peninsula almost connects back to the mainland, and like Erie, there is a bulkheaded cut from the lake into the bay.
