Photo of the Week
I do not always have a post to write, but I want to share my photos. So a couple of weeks ago I started posting a weekly photo. Just one photo each week. The photo may be new or it may come from my pile of favorites. A different photo will be posted every Monday. Drop by and check it out.
June 13, 2016 - Forgotten Travels, Forgotten Dreams
Here's a picture I took last September in the high desert of west Texas near the Balmorhea State Park. When I see an old trailer or boat that has obviously been abandoned and come to an ignominious end, I always wonder whether it ever lived up to its owner's dreams and expectations - hence the title.
To me, this abandoned old travel trailer just begged to be processed in black and white. I also tried to give the image the feel of an old film-based photo.

June 6, 2016 - The Crack of the Bat
This is my tutoring student and friend, Kelly, hitting a line-drive single that will bring in the runner on third base. I see Kelly one or two times a week and we talk about either algebra or geometry. So it was great fun to get out and see her truly in her element, on the playing field. It became even more fun when I was fortunate enough to grab this shot catching the ball just after it left her bat.

May 30, 2016 - A Blossom in Monochrome
I love the folds of the petals of this blossom and how they create subtle shadows. I used a wide lens opening which gives the photo a relatively shallow depth of field. Notice the sharpness at the front and center compared to the the backmost petal at the top.

May 23, 2016 - Red Pond at Armand Bayou
This is one of the ponds at the Armand Bayou Nature Center on the southeast side of Houston. The red algae covering the the pond caught my eye. It made for a photo with some interesting contrasts.

May 16, 2016 - Time Passes
About twenty-five years ago, Linda, April, and I walked out on this pier. It juts into the Aransas Bay at Rockport, Texas. We were there for a little holiday and would walk out on the pier and watch the dolphins play. Great stuff. Well, time has taken its toll on this old girl, just as it does with all of us. Vita continuat.

May 9, 2016 - Just A-Sittin' and A-Talkin'
I caught this shot of two Brown Pelicans "sittin' on the dock of the bay" having an afternoon chat. It sort of reminded me of those old photos of the old guys sitting around the cracker barrel at the local general store. Thirty years ago you could hardly find a Brown Pelican on the Galveston coast. Now, thanks to the ban on DDT, the Brown Pelican can be seen everywhere along the coast.

May 2, 2016 - Hospital at Heart Mountain
Heart Mountain was a Japanese Internment Camp during World War II. These two buildings were the camp hospital. Along with the camp boiler room they are the only buildings left standing at the camp. The hospital serviced over 11,000 people when the camp's population was at its peak.

April 25, 2016 - Headin' Home
While we at the FeatherFest in Galveston, I was able to get this shot of a Great Egret flying to its nest. I was thrilled with how fortunate I was able to catch it in a patch of blue between two clouds.

April 18, 2016 - Shoreline
This photo was taken several years ago along Lake Winnipeg in Canada. The colors of the seaweeds on the shore's edge caught my eye and I took this picture. This may have been the remnants of a "red tide" which occurs when there is a bloom of red algae in the water.
