I find the monarch butterfly incredibly brave - although I am sure it never crosses the monarch's mind. This amazing butterfly makes an annual migration from north to south. The monarch is the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration as birds do.
Monarchs cannot survive cold winters, so those living east of the Rocky Mountains migrate to Mexico and hibernate in oyamel fir trees. The monarchs use the very same trees each and every year when they migrate, which is amazing because they are not the same butterflies! These are the new fourth generation of monarch butterflies, so how in the world do they know which trees are the right ones? Geez, I need a GPS just to get to the Kroger.
The monarch below was part of the migration which moved through eastern Missouri in late September. I hope you enjoy this beautiful creature.
